FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. Name of the Institution

Huron College of Management, Technology and Health Care. The institute is registered as a Private Career College with the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities. Huron College is registered and approved as a private career college under the Private Career Colleges Act in the Province of Ontario, Canada. In addition, it is certified as an educational college and has been approved by the Ministry of Human Resources Development Canada under the Income Tax Act. It is also a member of the Ontario Association of Career Colleges and National Association of Career Colleges.

2. Types of programs offered

Huron College offers a wide variety of high demand Diploma, Post-Graduate Diploma and Certificate programs in Management, Technology and Health Care.

3. What are the admission requirements?

In order to qualify for admission at Huron College of Management, Technology and Health Care, You will require:

  • A minimum High School Diploma (12th Grade or equivalent) or Higher
  • A preferable TOEFL Score of 500 (paper based) or 170 (computer based); or English studies at the advanced level (Not applicable to ESL programs)
  • An entrance assessment and interview may be required for mature students
  • Other pre-requisites may be required depending upon the program applied

4. What else is required to qualify?

Local students must have

  • Proof of Canadian residency or citizenship
  • One passport size photograph and one digital picture
  • Academic records and resumes
  • Other pre-requisites may be required depending upon the program applied

International students require

  • A valid passport
  • Photo copy of current study permit and visa (if applicable)

5. Do I need to take the TOFEL or IELTS test?

It is not a pre-requisite of Huron College, however we highly recommend you take one of the tests if you are an International student since it may help in processing your application. It is strongly recommended that you take an IELTS test if you intend to study in English. You will need to attest to a visa officer that you will

  • a) observe the conditions of your admission to Canada, and
  • b) depart Canada at the end of the period authorized for your stay. A proven and verifiable ability to communicate in the language of your studies will assist the officer in making that determination.

6. Do I need to take an Entrance Assessment Test to enter the College?

For most of the programs you do not need to write an Assessment Test if you meet the program minimum requirements and are proficient in English. Admission into some programs may require taking an Entrance Assessment and interview. Please contact the Student Counselor for program specific admission requirements.

Canadian colleges, universities, technical institutes and other educational institutions encourage applications from qualified international students. If you are going to study in Canada for more than six (6) months, you need a study permit. Applicants going to study in any field in Canada for six (6) months or less do not require a Study Permit and can be processed as visitors. However, this applies only if the full course is six months or less. You cannot go to Canada for the first six months without a study permit and then obtain the permit. If you intend to study in the province of Quebec, you also need a Certificate of Acceptance (CAQ) from the Quebec government. You can obtain more information here.

9. Are there any hidden costs?

Cost of course ware, exam fee, Certificate/Diploma, accommodation, transportation and food costs and additional expenses like medical insurance, extracurricular activities, etc are not included in the Tuition fee and the students have to pay for the above expenses separately as required.

10. Do you have a Computer Lab?

Yes, we have a high-speed internet-enabled computer lab on site.

11. How many students per class?

We generally have 10 to 25 students per class; however student strength per class never exceeds more than 30.

12. Is Public transportation available?

Huron College of Management, Technology and Health Care is located in Toronto near Kipling Avenue on Rexdale Boulevard. It is easily accessible from the Kipling GO station and is well serviced by TTC and Mississauga Transit.

13. What is the College's payment policy?

  1. Students must pay a minimum of 25% of the total course cost at the time of registration. The rest can be paid before the beginning of study session or in installments.
  2. If the students are sponsored by a corporation or funded by a government agency, the college will determine the payment plan with the sponsor or loan office.
  3. International students must pay a minimum 25% of the total cost of the program to obtain an official Acceptance Letter. The balance of the tuition will be required at the time of course commencement.

14. What is the College's cancellation and refund policy?

  • All fee listed are quoted in CAD unless otherwise specified
  • All tuition fees and application fees must be paid in full on or before the beginning of the study session
  • All fees are non-transferable under any conditions
  • The tuition fee does not include the cost of study material, exam fee, Certificate/Diploma, food, stay, transportation and additional expenses like medical insurance, extracurricular activities, etc.
  • Local students must pay a minimum of 25% at the time of registration and the rest can be paid before the beginning of study session or in installments. " If the students are sponsored by a corporation or funded by government agency the college will determine the payment plan with the sponsor or loan office.
  • If we cancel the classes a full refund will be issued.
  • Students are entitled to a refund of fees paid for the program minus 20% of the total fees for the program or 500 dollars, whichever is less, if the student withdraws from the program before it commences.
  • Students must return any goods they received under a contract in the same state they were in when supplied to them (unopened) within 10 days of withdrawing in order to get credit for them.
  • Please refer to the Fee Collection and Refund fact sheet posted on our website for complete details, a copy of it is also provided with the Enrolment Contract.
  • Non-attendance does not constitute withdrawal with concern to refunds
  • Fees paid for courseware includes shipping costs and are non-refundable " Exam fee and special services fees are non-refundable
  • Processing of refunds takes 30 days after receiving the written request
  • All programs are subject to sufficient enrollment and so may be cancelled or rescheduled or transferred

15. What is the instruction type used at Huron College?

The instruction type depends on the selected program, though it is generally a combination of Instructor-led and practical classes; it is an optimum mix of lecture, classroom discussions, case studies, role-plays, seminars and special sessions conducted by professionals from the industry and trade.

16. Is the Curriculum fixed?

Diploma programs have a fixed curriculum; however Huron College can develop an individual plan for certification programs to accommodate individual needs.

17. When can I start?

Every year we have four intakes for most of the Diploma programs. Certificate programs usually start every month. Please check with the Course Counselor for specific dates and the availability of spaces. Enrollment into Diploma programs is continuous. 18. Do I need medical insurance?

Medical costs are expensive in Canada and the Government of Canada does not cover the medical costs for foreign students. International students are responsible to obtain medical coverage for the period of stay in Canada at their own expense. It is recommended to have your medical coverage in place before you arrive in Canada. Although proof of health insurance is not mandatory for the issuance of a study permit, it is strongly recommended that students obtain health coverage prior to their departure. Upon request we arrange medical insurance to our students through our service providers.

19. Do I get help in finding accommodations?

Yes, we can assist you in finding accommodations if you let us know of your requirements in advance. Different options like home stay and private accommodation are available and the costs vary from CAD 400 to CAD 1200 per month depending on individual life styles and choices.

20. Can I get a pick up from the airport when I arrive for the first time?

We can receive you from the airport and temporarily house you if you confirm your arrival details at least seven business business days in advance.

21. How do I apply?

For local students:

  • Visit our course pages and select your program of study
  • Fill out the online form and submit the registration, application and administration fee application along with processing and registration fee
  • Mail all your supporting documents along with your recent photographs (Do not send originals or negatives - photographs are for verification purposes)
  • We will inform you of our decision within a week
  • If accepted you will be asked to pay the program fee and we will send you the details of payment with the initial offer letter
  • Upon receipt of the program fee Huron College will send you an official acceptance letter and a receipt for the payment received
  • Always make sure to photocopy the documents you submit and keep a copy for your records For international students:

22. How long does the application process take?

The college admission department takes two business days after receiving all the documents to process your application. However, it depends on the completeness and accuracy of your application forms and whether you have submitted all the requested documents and fees. The Student Permit process at the Canadian Embassy may vary between 3 weeks to 6 weeks depending on the country you are applying from and if you require a medical examination. Therefore ensure that your application for student authorization is complete and accurate and that you have submitted all requested documents along with your application.

23. Where do I obtain an Application for a study permit?

On line application forms (IMM 1294) along with instructional Guide (IMM 5269) are available at http:// www.cic.gc.ca/english/applications/student.html and may be downloaded or contact your nearest Canadian Embassy or Consulate.

24. As an international student, can I work in Canada during or after my studies?

The Canadian Immigration Laws do not allow international students attending private colleges to work either during or after their study period, unless the curriculum includes an internship component as part of the program of study. Students may apply for a work permit provided they first obtain a letter of employment from a prospective employer.

25. Do International students qualify for financial assistance?

The Canadian Government does not provide financial assistance to foreign students. We suggest that you contact your local governments or financial institutions in your country of residence if you require any financial assistance. Huron College of Management, Technology and Health Care does not provide financial assistance or scholarships to International students.

26. I am a local student. Do I qualify for financial assistance?

27. Do I have to write an entrance test to join the Dental Hygiene Program?

You are exempted from entrance test if you are Dental Assistant or a foreign trained Dentist. All others may have to write an entrance exam.

28. What are the dates to write entrance tests at Huron College?

Entrance tests can be taken any time during the regular college hours by booking an appointment for the test. Call our reception at 416 694 8766 (416 My Huron) to book your test.

29. Can I start working as a Hygienist after completing my studies at Huron College?

The practice of Dental Hygiene is regulated under the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991, and the Dental Hygiene Act, 1991. Graduates are also required to take a provincial clinical competency assessment in addition to the National Dental Hygiene Certification Exam (NDHCE). Students are responsible for contacting the National Dental Hygiene Certification Board and College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario (CDHO) to find out the details with respect to writing the NDHCE and registering with the CDHO. 30. What is the cut off date for applications? It is usually one month before the class start date but some programs have limited enrolment so students are encouraged to apply ahead of the application cut off date.
